Law Professor • Socio-legal Scholar • Disciplinary Leader
I bridge legal doctrine and lived experience as an internationally recognized socio-legal scholar examining how law operates in practice. As the Edward L. Carmody Professor of Law at the University of Iowa—where I've taught for five years following 12 years at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law—I draw on a PhD in sociology from Princeton and a JD from the University of Pennsylvania to produce award-winning scholarship and teaching.
Beyond my scholarship, I shape the future of labor and employment law through leadership on the executive committees of the Labor Law Research Network and the Labor Law Group, and active engagement in the American Bar Association's Labor and Employment Law Section. At Iowa Law, I direct graduate studies and visitor programs and serve as faculty liaison to the Iowa Labor Center. I've previously co-directed the IIT Chicago-Kent Institute for Law of the Workplace and co-chaired the Law and Society Association's Labor Rights Collaborative Research Network..
